The Writer Behind Teach Blog Travel

I’m a former teacher turned full-time travel blogger. For five years, I lived and taught on a reservation in northern Arizona. This is where I became passionate about indigenous rights, Native American history, and education equity on reservations.

I truly believe that education, commerce, and tourism are three ways we can help the world care, and be more aware, of what’s happening on the rez. So on my website and throughout my content, you’ll learn ways to take impactful action.

If you’re here on this page, I believe you’re already a conscious traveler – and that you’re ready to do something positive. You want to have your travels and spending habits reflect your values. You’re truly a thoughtful traveler who wants to be respectful, and do things the right way.

On my site, you’ll find ways to support communities across Indian Country and beyond, while learning more about sensitive issues like race, identity, and power dynamics.

You’ll find that I share from a place of humility as a friend and peer. There are no dumb questions, and I’m the person who answers the ones you’re afraid to ask out loud,

Instagram is a great place to start if you’re learning about Native American history and life on reservations for the first time.

Then, choose how you want to support indigenous communities – through education, travel, or through commerce.

Where I’ve Been

Travel Destinations

Arizona

  • Navajo Nation
  • Fort Apache Reservation
  • Havasupai Reservation

I’ve lived in Arizona for more than 10 years. I went to college in Flagstaff, lived in Phoenix, lived on a reservation near Show Low, and I now reside in Tucson. Between my Parks & Recreation Management Degree and seasonal jobs, I really know this state.

California

  • Agua Caliente
  • Twenty-Nine Palms
  • Augustine

Many people don’t include California as part of the American Southwest, and I think that’s a mistake – because it should be! I grew up in southern California, near the Salton Sea – right across the highway from the Torres-Martinez reservation.

Colorado

  • Southern Ute
  • Mountain Ute
  • San Juan Skyway
  • Denver
  • Durango
  • Ouray

Colorado is another state that’s often contested when it comes to being part of the Southwest. It’s one of the four corner states, and it’s home to the most prominent American Indian colleges and surrounding communities. So I definitely include it in the group!

New Mexico

  • Jicarilla Apache
  • Mescalero Apache
  • Navajo Nation
  • Fort Sill Apache
  • To’Hajiilee Reservation
  • Pueblo Communities

I’ve had the pleasure of traveling all over New Mexico – Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, and so many of the smaller towns in between. Since it’s just one state over, I’m always looking up new cities and towns to visit there. Taos especially is a must-not-miss.

Oklahoma

  • Broken Bow
  • Wichita Mountains
  • Quartz Mountain SP
  • Chickasaw Rec. Area

Many people are surprised to find just how much natural beauty Oklahoma has. The state is also home to many federally recognized tribes and indigenous communities. In fact, Oklahoma is where many tribes ended up relocating to on the Trail of Tears.

Utah

  • Ute
  • Paiute
  • Navajo Nation

Many people come to Utah for the big five national parks – Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef. But there’s so much more to the state. If you love nature, the outdoors, and social history, it needs to be on your road trip stops or itinerary.
